Google hasn't yet released any details about how the reading levels are calculated, but -- unlike Google's search results algorithm -- it might eventually be made public. Google hasn't yet made an official blog post about the reading options, just posted a small announcement in one of their help forums. Don't be too sad if your blog doesn't rank an "advanced," though; we ran the full text of James Joyce's Ulysses through a Google Search, and it only scored "basic."
