Darkworks TriOviz for Games SDK Brings 3D Capabilities to Unreal Engine 3

Darkworks, the Paris-based action adventure game developer and video game tools provider, today announced that TriOviz for Games SDK has been accepted into Epic’s Unreal Engine 3 Integrated Partners Program (IPP).

“Darkworks is already a recognized leader in the console 3D video game space,” said Alexis Arragon, TriOviz Product Manager at Darkworks. “Partnering with an industry leader like Epic Games is a huge boost for us and it happens at a time when game developers are looking to create robust 3D experiences to meet growing consumer demand. With this relationship, Epic and UE3 licensees will have 3D stereoscopic capability at their fingertips.”

The TriOviz for Games SDK leverages existing three-dimensional graphics information in-game to greatly enhance depth-of-field (DOF), geometry volume and position as well as characters within a scene. This approach negates the need for rendering multiple images, so TriOviz for Games runs at full-frame rate on consoles, enabling developers to maintain the resolution, performance and game play integrity of their AAA console games while running in 3D stereoscopic mode.

“TriOviz and Unreal Engine 3 were used to ship Batman: Arkham Asylum Game of the Year Edition in stereoscopic 3D on PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, so this is proven technology,” said Mark Rein, vice president of Epic Games. “What I like about the latest version of TriOviz is that, with their offering, our engine can support not only the highest quality solution for customers with the latest 3D TVs, such as a PlayStation 3 with a Sony Bravia 3D TV, but also a colored-glasses 3D solution for customers who don’t have a 3D-capable TV. This means users of TriOviz-licensed games can experience stereoscopic 3D on consoles no matter what their budget, and the effort that developers put into making great 3D experiences with it isn’t limited to a small audience of early 3D TV adopters. Combining the best 3D SDK for games with the power of UE3 gives our licensees a huge advantage in enabling AAA 3D experiences for their entire audience.”

TriOviz integration is streamlined and can be implemented very quickly, requiring approximately one week to enhance a game with 3D. Integrating the SDK is much like incorporating a shader, so most development teams already have the tools and expertise needed to implement TriOviz seamlessly.

TriOviz will be available to all UE3 licensees via Epic’s support site, the Unreal Developer Network (udn.epicgames.com), next month.

Darkworks will be in the Epic Games meeting room, BC 430, at Game Developers Conference Online, Austin Convention Center, Oct. 6 - 8, 2010. To schedule a meeting, please send an email to g.hannah@darkworks.com.

For press inquiries, please email pr@darkworks.com.

Phrases Overtakes FarmVille As Top Facebook App

After 15 months of dominating the social network, Zynga's FarmVille is no longer the most popular application on Facebook (according to monthly users), unseated by an innocuous app called Phrases.

FarmVille has held the top spot on the site since August 2009 and reached its peak of 84 million monthly active users earlier this year. Then Facebook implemented changes to its notification system in an effort to reduce spam in March, and many of its top social games have shed millions of users since.

The farming sim currently has 53.9 million monthly players and continues to lose users each week. It remains the most popular social game on Facebook, though, and it has a bigger daily active audience, 16 million, than any other app -- its closest competition is Windows Live Messenger with 9.7 million daily users.

Developed by Takeoff Monkey, Phrases enables people to post sayings, images, and quizzes from a variety of pre-generated topics on their newsfeed. It's managed to grow virally to 54.3 million monthly users by attaching links to itself on newsfeed posts, and by enabling users to create and share quizzes for others.

Phrases isn't expected to stay at the top of the social network for long, as Takeoff Monkey recently disabled the app for U.S. users without offering any explanation, and its daily active count is dropping fast, according to Inside Facebook. It could drop to #2 and even further soon if this restriction remains.

And despite this likely temporary setback, Zynga still operates five of the top seven most popular apps on Facebook: FarmVille, Texas HoldEm Poker, FrontierVille, Mafia Wars, and Cafe World. The developer is also planning its first international game launch, CityVille, with a public beta in the coming weeks.

Google Calendar gets optional attendees

Google Calendar optional attendees
Google Calendar has received support for 'optional attendees' today. This lets you communicate the importance of an event for each individual attendee and was born out of the observation that meetings aren't equally important to all the people invited to attend them. For some, a certain meeting may be crucial, while others could have been added just as a courtesy. The new feature lets you mark attendees as optional so they won't be forced to attend a meeting that isn't very important to them unless they really want to.

To make some attendees optional, click on the "Make some attendees optional" link above the guest list for any meeting in Google Calendar, and toggle the role of each attendee by clicking on the icon next to their name.

Support for optional attendees should already be available to all Google Calendar users.

Epic Games Brings Unreal Engine 3 to iPad, iPhone and iPod touch

CARY, N.C. ? September 1, 2010 ? Epic Games, Inc. today announced its ?Epic Citadel? App is now available from the App Store. The app showcases the technical capabilities of Epic?s award-winning Unreal Engine 3 on iPad, iPhone and iPod touch. In ?Epic Citadel,? players navigate a fictional castle realm using simple controls and the innovative Multi-Touch user interface. ?Epic Citadel? also features stunning visuals and special effects, with an environment inspired by ?Project Sword,? Epic?s newest game.

?Project Sword? is the codename of the all-new action role-playing adventure game exclusively for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch developed by Epic?s critically acclaimed studio, Chair Entertainment, creators of the Xbox LIVE Arcade games of the year ?Undertow? and ?Shadow Complex.? Scheduled for release later this year, ?Project Sword? will bring unrivaled visual fidelity and a highly accessible gameplay experience to the iOS platform.

?This is a testament to the sheer power of iOS devices as up until now, Unreal Engine 3 has typically been used to create high-end gaming experiences on game consoles and computers,? said Epic Games President Dr. Michael Capps. ?And we?re not just keeping it to ourselves. We’re putting Unreal Engine 3 technology into the hands of game developers all over the world, and we can’t wait to see the apps they make next.?

A small team of Epic?s programmers, artists and testers created ?Epic Citadel? in just eight weeks of development time. Unreal Engine 3 is scalable yet packed with the same tools hundreds of thousands of users work with to create games, simulations and animated content. Features include:

  • Amazing visuals. ?Epic Citadel? pushes the envelope for stunning visuals on iOS devices. Through the latest advances in Unreal Engine 3 technology, the application delivers unrivaled graphics and special effects that immerse players in the kingdom?s grounds.
  • Bump offset mapping. Also known as parallax mapping or relief mapping, bump offset mapping enhances the visual appearance of stone walls and rocks providing intricate textures.
  • Normal mapped architecture. Brings stunning detail to bricks and ground surfaces within the environment.
  • Texture blending with painted weight maps. Refines nuances on roads and terrain, making them rich and lifelike.
  • Global illumination. Unreal Engine 3?s built-in global illumination system, Unreal Lightmass, provides realistic lighting and shadows with minimal development resources.
  • Dynamic specular lighting with texture masks. Helps create authentic cobblestone roads and vivid reflective marble surfaces, while lens flares and light coronas add dramatic emphasis when panning across light sources.
  • Real-time reflections and animation. Environment mapping enables real-time reflections on objects such as the statue inside the cathedral. Dynamic movements of trees and banners are made possible through the use of vertex deformation and skeletal animation.
  • Free tools. Epic?s Unreal Development Kit (UDK), available for free download at http://www.udk.com/download, ships with the same tools and technologies used to create Epic Citadel.

?Epic Citadel? is available for free from the App Store on iPad, Phone and iPod touch. For more information about ?Epic Citadel,? visit http://www.epic-citadel.com.

Zukmo is the best-named Web bookmarking service on the planet

zukmo

I'm sorry; I simply could not resist covering a service with a name like Zukmo. Apart from the name, there's absolutely no connection between myself and the service. And I must say, the name is just about the most remarkable thing about this service at the moment (which is saying a lot).

It's basically a Web bookmarking service. I can't even call it "social bookmarking" because there doesn't appear to be anything social about it at the moment. You get a bookmarklet or a browser add-on (for Chrome, Firefox or IE). You then click the button when you're visiting a page you'd like to bookmark, and the page is saved. Very straightforward.

One significant difference from Delicious and Diigo is that Zukmo supports only preconfigured "categories". Meaning, you can't just tag your bookmarks - you need to set up categories beforehand, and then select a category for your bookmark.

The site's design feels fairly dated. The copyright starts at 2004 but extends all the way to 2010, which explains the general appearance. All in all, if your name doesn't happen to begin with "Zuk", I see no reason for you to try Zukmo. I still had to cover it, though.

GMG To Sell Bloodline Champions Prepaid Cards

Digital currency card publisher GMG Entertainment signed an exclusive agreement with Funcom to roll out prepaid cards for upcoming MMO Bloodline Champions to stores in North America, Europe, Scandinavia, and Australia.

Developed by Swedish outfit Stunlock Studios, Bloodline Champions is a competitive online multiplayer arena combat game. Funcom, which has also published MMOs like Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures and Anarchy Online, hasn't announced a release date, but the title already has over 150,000 registered beta players.

Though Bloodline Champions is a free-to-play game with microtransactions, Funcom is offering two "core versions": a $29.99 pack that includes 16 bloodlines classes and the option to spend $9.99 for four more Bloodlines (free client includes four Bloodlines on a weekly rotation), and an $89.99 edition with all 20 bloodlines and other bonuses.

"After evaluating the international market for digital currency cards we are very pleased to have selected GMG as our partner for Bloodline Champions," says Funcom's Sales and Marketing VP Morten Larssen. Founded in 2002, GMG provides digital currency cards for a variety of virtual goods marketplaces. Its digital partners include Facebook, Meez, THQ, and many others.

Larsenn adds, "Their know-how of the retail market, international foothold and passionate understanding of our product made this a clear choice for us. We very much look forward to offering the fans of our game the flexibility that these store cards represent."

Combat Vets On CoD: Black Ops, Medal of Honor Taliban

An anonymous reader writes "Thom 'SSGTRAN' Tran, seen in the Call of Duty: Black Ops live action trailer and in the game as the NVA multiplayer character, gets interviewed and talks about Medal of Honor's Taliban drama. '... to me, it's a non-issue. This is Hollywood. This is entertainment. There has to be a bad guy if there's going to be a good guy. It's that simple. Regardless of whether you call them — "Taliban" or "Op For" — you're looking at the same thing. They're the bad guys.'"
Gamasutra published a related story about military simulation games from the perspective of black ops veteran and awesome-name-contest winner Wolfgang Hammersmith. "In his view, all gunfights are a series of ordered and logical decisions; when he explains it to me, I can sense him performing mental math, brain exercise, the kind that appeals to gamers and game designers. Precise skill, calculated reaction. Combat operations and pistolcraft are the man's life's work."

The Ethics of Social Games

Gamespot is running a story about the ethics and morality of the social games market, which in recent years has exploded to involve hundreds of millions of players. Between micro-transactions, getting players to recruit friends, and the thin line between compelling games and addictive games, there are plenty of opportunities for developers to stray into shady practices. Quoting:
"The most successful social games to date have used very simple gameplay mechanics, encouraging neither strategy nor dexterity but regular interaction with the game ... Although undeniably successful, the existing social game framework has been the subject of much debate among game developers from every corner of the game industry, from the mainstream to the indie community. Some, like Super Meat Boy creator Edmund McMillen, are particularly strident in their assessment. 'Social games tend to have a really seedy and abusive means of manipulation that they use to rope people in and keep them in,' McMillen said. 'People are so tricked into that that they'll actually spend real money on something that does absolutely nothing, nothing at all.'

SiteLauncher for Chrome lets you jump to sites using a single keystroke

sitelauncher

Back in 2008, Lee covered SiteLauncher for Firefox. It's a simple add-on that provides you with a customizable "shortcut panel" for your favorite websites. SiteLauncher for Chrome provides basically the same service, but for Google's browser. I've been using it for a few days now, and while it's not perfect, it's still very handy.

Pros: When it works, it really does provide single-keystroke access to the sites I need. Ctrl+Space and then d can take me to Download Squad. I like it. It's very customizable. You can create and delete groups, move sites from group to group, etc. The hotkey assignment GUI is well thought-out. You can see at a glance what hotkeys are already used.

Cons: It doesn't always work. Sometimes I hit Ctrl+Space and nothing happens. That's mainly when the address bar ("Omnibar") is in focus, and I suspect it's due to Chrome's limitations. Still, it's annoying. It's one of those add-ons that takes some getting used to, but once you're addicted, you want to use it all the time. Having it work intermittently just keeps the habit from forming.

Okay, that was just one con -- but it's a big one!

Bottom line: Awesome add-on, if only it worked all the time.
